Dear Fellow Cathedral Members:

The search process for our next Rector and Dean will begin soon, and I want to provide you with our tentative time line. As you know, Dean McKeachie intends to retire next spring, and it is my hope that his successor will be in place by then so that we will have no need for an interim rector. To accomplish this, I have proposed the following schedule to the Vestry.

Form a Search Committee – This is already underway. The Search Committee will be made up of the Senior and Junior Wardens, some Vestry members, and members of The Cathedral that represent a cross-section of our parish family.

Develop list of potential candidates – Between now and August 15 I am asking any Cathedral member that knows of a potential candidate for Rector to submit the name to me in care of the Cathedral Office. Please include all contact information including current position, mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone numbers(s). This list will be forwarded to Bishop Lawrence on August 15, and he will add any candidates he feels deserve consideration.

Develop Parish Profile – This document will be a detailed description of The Cathedral, including our history, our current makeup, our strengths and our weaknesses, our ministries and our mission. It will describe the qualities we feel are needed in a candidate for Rector. To develop a new Parish Profile (last done in 1995 before that search) we will be conducting a Parish Survey. We will ask each member of The Cathedral to complete a short questionnaire which will allow you to voice your desires for The Cathedral’s future and tell us what is most important to you. We hope to have the questionnaire out in early August, with the goal of completing the Parish Profile by early September.

The Search Process – By October 1 we should have our list of interested candidates, and members of the Search Committee will travel to visit the various candidates in their current parishes, attend services, and interview each one. This process should take no more than 60 days.

Narrowing the Field – The Search Committee will review the reports from all visits and try to pare the list down to no more than three finalists. Each finalist will be invited to Charleston to visit The Cathedral, meet with the Search Committee and the Vestry, and to see Charleston. I would hope this could be done in December and early January.

Final Recommendation and Call – The Search Committee will make its recommendation to The Vestry and, if the Vestry approves it, that individual will be offered the position. The new Rector would be expected to be at The Cathedral by Eastertide.

As you can see, we have the luxury of time, but we need to focus on making each step happen as I have outlined. I will provide you with periodic updates as we move through the process. For now I ask you to submit any candidate’s name you wish to put forth, and be prepared for the questionnaire in August. I also ask for your continued prayers for the Search Committee as we work to find the Sixth Dean of South Carolina.

Faithfully Yours,
John A. Wallace, Jr.
Senior Warden
