The Cathedral "Home away from home" Ministry to Citadel Cadets And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. -Matthew 25:40 It might seem strange at first glance to count a college student as among the "least" in God's kingdom, but anyone who has had even the most cursory introduction to The Citadel will realize that a first-year cadet knows all too well what it means to be "least": he is away from home and the support of family and friends and relegated to a new life of severe regimen marked by physical, mental and spiritual fatigue. It is for this reason that at the beginning of every year The Cathedral has committed herself to an act of simple Christian charity: serving these weary young students a hot meal in a hospitable environment, offering them a slice of home-away-from-home. We invite you all, and in particular, those of you with a Citadel connection to join us as we answer Christ's call to serve the least in our midst. There are several ways to get involved with this ministry. Please consider taking on one of the following roles: Shoppers: we need persons to purchase the items on our shopping list and deliver them to the Cathedral on the preceding Friday. Shoppers can be reimbursed by the Cathedral. You can download a typical shopping list to get an idea of what we need each week. Chefs: these no-frills culinary artists who specialize in "bulk" arrive early Sunday morning to cook up the victuals. Hosts: though the breakfasts are "self-serve," we need persons to make sure that the juice pitchers stay full, the grits stay hot, and most of all, the Cadets stay happy. Clean-up crew: it's not a flashy task, but it's necessary. The members of the clean-up crews are the "Mother Theresa's" of our cadet ministry, cleaning up after our weary friends go their way to worship at the 9 o'clock liturgy. Drivers: we need a few drivers to pick up the cadets at 7:45 am and bring them to the church in time for the 8 am breakfast.
