Each Sunday at the 11:00 service, year-round, as the Gospel procession returns to the apse, our youngest parishioners and guests follow the Magee Cross and seasonal banner to the Beckwith Children’s Chapel for a message tailored to their attention level and understanding.

Liturgically, it is the same message heard during the lessons at “Big Church”, with a homily from the Chapel’s extensive private library.

Designed in 1951, the Chapel is in miniature…from the altar to its pews and kneelers; its size appropriate for our smallest saints.

The Chapel is dedicated to John Q. Beckwith, rector of the church at the time of its merger with St. Luke’s in 1949 and the millwright for the Chapel’s fixtures.  The Altar Cross is dedicated to Lizzie Thomas LaRoche, long-time Sunday School teacher, while the Processional Cross is dedicated to Marie Magee, wife of the third Dean of South Carolina and tireless worker for the children of the parish.

In use for the service, is the Children’s Chapel Prayerbook complied by Susan Howell, incorporating years of memory and notes from previous leaders of the Chapel.

For generations of our youngest parishioners, the road to our Savior began with bowed heads in the Children’s Chapel.
